1773 : John Hancock, Class of 1754 and first signer of the Declaration of Independence, becomes Treasurer of Harvard College.

1770 : The Massachusetts Great and General Court (legislature) convenes in Harvard Hall to escape the political tumult in Boston.

1770 : Eleven colonists are shot by British troops in the Boston Massacre.

Edward Holyoke

Term of office: 1737-1769, died in office on June 1, not long before his 80th birthday, making him the oldest to serve as Harvard President (1689-1769). 1764 : During a furious winter storm, the first Harvard Hall goes up in smoke on the site of today's replacement.
